5 Things Every Website Needs to Have to Increase Conversions
Your website is the first place you define your online presence, and it’s where you create a true connection with your clients and customers. The experience you make for each visitor will determine how many leads and sales you’ll generate.
These tips are designed to help you optimize your website to boost conversions.
1. Use Google Analytics
Google Analytics is free to sign up and use, and it provides incredible insights into where your website traffic is coming from and how much time users are spending on your page. This will help you focus on the platforms that are driving traffic to your website and also help you when you’re creating content to see what’s most popular.
When I started my first blog, I was spending most of my time on Facebook and Instagram, but when I checked my analytics, I realized that almost all of my traffic was coming from Pinterest. By focusing my marketing efforts on Pinterest, I increased my website visits substantially.
You don’t need to be looking at your analytics constantly but check them monthly to see what pages and content are drawing visitors in and where you need to make improvements.
Key Action Step: You don’t need to be everywhere doing everything. Focus on what’s getting you results by looking at your numbers.
2. Make your website mobile responsive
The mobile experience is everything. In fact, mobile phones generate 52% of the total internet traffic (Statista, 2019).
Make sure your website is optimized for mobile. In WordPress, this is easy to check as it’s shows you exactly what the experience is like for mobile users. Go through the mobile experience after making any website edits or when you’re setting up your initial website.
The key things to check for are :
- Are the images showing up well?
- Is the opt-in form easy to fill out?
- How easy it for users to shop or book a call?
- How long does it take for my page to load?
- The key here is to test the user experience and make it as easy as possible for people to interact with your website.
Key Action Step: Send this to a friend or someone you trust to get their thoughts for a fresh perspective. I also offer free creative consultations where you can bring your content, and I”ll provide instant feedback.

3. Master opt-ins
According to AutoGrow, 98% of the people visiting your website won’t buy right away, and 70% won’t visit your site again—that’s why it’s important to use opt-in effectively to capture leads.
Where your opt-in is will determine how likely people are to sign up. I’ve seen websites where the email list subscription form is hidden way at the bottom of the page—chances are customers won’t scroll all the way, or they’ll miss it entirely.
Put your opt-in form front and centre on the top half of the page, so it’s visible without scrolling. You can also consider adding an opt-in pop-up that appears after someone spends a certain amount of time on your page. Although they may seem annoying, pop-ups actually boost conversion rates by, on average, 3 – 28% (Popupsmart.com).
Add incentives to your opt-ins to help boost conversions. Here are a few of the most popular incentives you can use on your website:
- Free shipping
- Discount code – For example, sign up for our newsletter and receive 10% off your first order.
- Free gifts with your first order
- Content upgrades (PDF checklists, downloads) for more information on the topic.
If they’re new to your page, these give them extra reasons to sign up. Another great place to put opt-ins is on exit and on checkouts for products.
Key Action Step: Add an incentive to your opt-in.
4. Create an epic About page
According to Neil Patel (one of the world’s top digital marketers), your About page is one of the most important web pages on your blog.
Regardless of if you offer a product or service, make sure that you have an About page that showcases who you are and what you have to offer.
Start with a headline or a statement that focuses on the problems you solve or the number one benefit of working with you. For example, my benefit statement is: I help ambitious entrepreneurs increase their income and impact with captivating copy.
Then, share your story, including how you got started, why you’re so passionate about what you do, your brand values and what you have to offer. Use this as an opportunity to showcase your flair and personality. Honesty is key here, don’t be afraid to share where you started from and the struggles you faced to get where you are.
People aren’t only buying a product or service—they want to buy from a person they connect with, relate to or aspire to be like. Who you are and what you stand for has the ability to influence purchasing decisions. Ben & Jerry’s is an incredible example of this. While other organizations tip-toed around in their statements, Ben & Jerrys powerfully declared their support for Black Lives Matters. By doing so, they created a passionate following.
Key Action Step: Be vulnerable, stand up for what you believe in and showcase your beautiful personality. Authenticity will help you stand out and resonate with your ideal clients.
5. Keep your website up to date and have fun experimenting
Instead of updating your website once every few years, make sure you’re keeping it up to date and regularly experimenting to boost sales and leads.
Ask yourself what the number one thing is that you want your clients to do when they visit your website. Use your analytics to see what works the best to support your number one goal.
